NOYS Combats Youth Substance Abuse

NOYS Combats Youth Substance AbuseThe NOYS Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Working Group seeks ways to promote youth leadership, and build partnerships  to empower and engage youth to prevent substance abuse.  Teen alcohol and other drug abuse is a concern impacting youth in our country. Empowering and engaging youth to make positive decisions to avoid teenage substance abuse is essential in our efforts to protecting youth and building a foundation for their immediate and future success.  NOYS Coalition members programs and resources to address substance abuse include information about prevention, recognition, and intervention.

According to the first-ever analysis of drug involvement from theNational Highway Transportation Safety Administration's Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS)census, one in three motor vehicle fatalities with known drug test results tested positive for drugs in 2009. And in a 2007 NHTSA Roadside Survey of Alcohol and Drug Use by Drivers, 1 in 8 nighttime weekend drivers tested positive for an illicit drug.  This number rises to 1 in 6 when you include illicit drugs and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, according to the most recent Monitoring the Future report—the Nation's largest survey of drug use among young people—one in ten high school seniors reported that in the two weeks prior to the survey they had driven after smoking marijuana. Just for Youth

Encourage youth in your community to participate in the Above the Influence "Influence Project". The "Influence Project" is a new initiative from the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign aimed at getting teens to share their insights about the positive and negative influences they see around them and their approach to "staying above it."

Teens can go to the abovetheinfluence.com for information, resources, and activities for youth.
