How You Can Help Yourself
Allow Yourself to Feel
There is nothing wrong or unique about the emotions that you feel when you experience tragedy. It is normal and human to feel a mix of feelings or just completely out of control. Don’t try to tell yourself how to feel; let it come naturally.
Expressing Yourself
Everyone expresses themselves in a different way. Find a way that is healthy for you. Cry, read, write, talk, exercise, sing. What is your normal outlet for stress?
Don’t Set a Time Limit for Grieving
There is no set time for how long a person should grieve. It is very normal to still feel just as upset several years down the road. Be patient with yourself, and continue to take steps to cope with the tragedy.
Find Your Support System
Family and friends are almost always part of the best support system, but they don’t have to be the only support system. Sometimes people find ways to cope through acquaintances such as support groups, therapy, and through stories from complete strangers.
Take Care of You
Even though it may not seem like it, especially in the beginning, life will continue to go on, and normal lifestyles will resume. Becoming unhealthy through making negative physical and mental decisions will only make matters worse. Staying healthy and not indulging in negative influences will only help your grieving process.
