The message we will be delivering through “FOCUS, It Is Not All About YOU!”  is that decisions made while driving have an impact on your life, and the lives of others.  Our service-learning program will target young drivers, ages 15-20, this age group has a high vulnerability to motor vehicle collisions on rural roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America.  Mile for mile, teenagers are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as all other drivers.  This project will address the issue of seat belt usage as well as distracted driving.  According the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about 60 percent of traffic fatalities occur in rural areas, this is an important area to address.  In Montana seventy seven percent of our roadways are classified as rural by the U.S. Department of Transportation.  Rural roads are defined as roads outside of an incorporated city.

Our message will be delivered to students, parents and community members through newsletters, a link to our school website, feature articles in our local paper, and a student produced commercial on the local cable channel.  We have contacted our City Council and will submit a proclamation proclaiming a week in October FOCUS Week.

September 30 Update:

Three Forks High School students have been busy planning the initial activities for the kickoff to our FOCUS On The Road.  It is Not All About You!  We have a Mock Crash scheduled for October 1, 2008.  Our Crash includes the Three Forks Volunteer Fire Department, Three Forks Ambulance, Gallatin County Sherriff's Office, Gallatin County Coroner's Office and the Three Forks Marshal's Office.

Students from the Emergency Response class will respond as part of the EMS crew on the Ambulance.  FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) students are doing a pre-crash all school assembly which includes an introduction to the national crisis surrounding distracted driving in the teen population.  This assembly will include presentations from law enforcement as well.  Immediately following the mock crash we will have a debriefing about the after effects of a teen crash involving fatalities.  One of our speakers will be the Mother of a Three Forks High School senior involved in a fatal crash.  The post crash assembly will focus on the after affects of a fatal car crash.

We have ordered promotional materials including magnetic bumper billboards, keychains and signs to be placed around our community.  Look for pictures next week.
