Rock the Belt!

Faribault High School students organized with Northfield College City Beverage to provide a school-wide assembly on October 22, 2008.  Street Smart, a pair of two paramedics from Orlando, Florida, presented on the dangers of driving.

Faribault High School STOPS completed their Halloween drug and alcohol awareness education campaign!  STOPS made 30 tombstones out of Styrofoam of famous people who have died due to drug and alcohol-related causes.  These tombstones were displayed in the hallways, along with other Halloween decorations.  In addition, STOPS students made a graveyard in the high school courtyard.  Tombstones read "smoker," "first time ecstasy user," "mixed alcohol with driving," "distracted driver," and "alcohol poisoning," to demonstrate the scary side of drug and alcohol use.  STOPS students hosted the 2009 Halloween Costume Contest.  Winners were given "Rock the Belt" prizes!

Over the first 2-month span of the "Rock the Belt" campaign, STOPS impacted over 1,200 students!  STOPS will continue with the "Rock the Belt" campaign through the remaining of the school year, with planned events such as a seat belt challenge month, a mach crash, chemical awareness weeks and much more!

The 2008-2009 STOPS homecoming safety celebrations were a success!  More than 20 STOPS members decorated a float with the jungle themes of "STOPS goes bananas for safety" and "STOPS doesn't monkey around with drugs."  STOPS members handed out hundreds of candy-filled spirit sticks which read, "Rock the Belt!"

STOPS is now planning their school-wide Halloween Safety Week, which will include fake gravestones, skeletons, and plenty of safety messages!  Stay tuned for more updates!

September 30 Update:

The Faribault High School STOPS group launched their 2008-2009 Rock the Belt campaign!  STOPS members made hundreds of spirit sticks with safety messages to hand out during the high school homecoming parade and pep fest.  These spirit sticks are delicious reminders about the importance of making safe decisions during homecoming season.

Instructions on making spirit sticks:

  1. Collect hundreds of toilet paper rolls.
  2. Fill each toilet paper roll with candy.
  3. Wrap each toilet paper roll with tissue paper.
  4. Secure ends with ribbon. (We used green ribbons to represent our school colors!)
  5. Write a safety message on each spirit stick!
  6. Toss them to the crowd at the homecoming pep fest, parade, or game!

In addition, STOPS members will design a homecoming float to enter into the Faribault High School’s homecoming parade on October 3, 2008.  The STOPS float will feature safety messages about driving attentiveness, seat belt use, and drug and alcohol prevention.  STOPS members are enthusiastic about delivering their campaign message to the community.  The parade is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to learn about safety!
STOPS members are gearing up to host the 2008 Halloween Safety Week at the Faribault High School.  STOPS members will plaster the high school walls with safety-related Halloween decorations.  STOPS will also ask the local newspaper and radio to feature articles and commercials about the importance of safety during the Halloween season!  On Halloween, STOPS will host a costume contest and fashion show at the Faribault High School during lunch.  Winners of the costume contest will receive “Rock the Belt” prizes!

The mission of the Faribault High School Students Together Offering Peer Support (STOPS) group is to encourage healthy decisions and to serve better ourselves and others.  Annually, STOPS members organize hundreds of youth safety activities throughout the community and volunteer an average of 25,000 hours!  This year, with the help of National Organizations for Youth Safety, STOPS will be kicking off the “Rock the Belt” safety campaign in Faribault, Minnesota!

STOPS members will continue to concentrate on peer education and promoting positive lifestyles through numerous “Rock the Belt”-themed events.  Events include reminding students to stay safe during homecoming by passing out candy with safety-messages and making a “Rock the Belt” float for the homecoming parade.  During Halloween season, STOPS members will decorate the school with Halloween-related safety reminders and host a costume contest.  In December, STOPS members will plan an intense month of seat belt safety campaigning, full of seat belt surveys, safety videos, and collaboration with the police department and other community members.  In addition, the “Rock the Belt” campaign will include awareness weeks at the high school, full of week-long safety activities and education.  STOPS will also deliver their safety message to all ages in the community of Faribault.  In February, STOPS members will invite 300-5th grade students to the high school for an overnight lock-in where members will educate the 5th graders about the importance of making safe decisions.

STOPS understands the importance of community support and collaboration.  Throughout the year, STOPS members will work diligently with community members and groups to decrease underage drinking and improve driving safety education.
