“Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected! Save Teen Lives!”
October 31st, 2008, Final Report:
Happy Halloween from the Halloween Capitol of the World!
Anoka High School SADD sends you goolish wishes for a safe evening!
It is 7:05 PM and we better finish our final report, so we slip into costumes and do a little trick or treating!
Thank you NOYS, Sandy Spavone, Staff, and Judges for giving us the opportunity to be one of the Top Ten Teams in the 2008 Rural Youth Traffic Safety Message Campaign. It has been an amazing experience!
Last July at the SADD National Conference, we learned about the application process. It was on the way home to Minnesota and during a four hour lay over at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport, that Ashley Curley, Co-President of Anoka High School SADD, decided that we should apply.
Curley’s idea was to educate Minnesota teens about the new 2008 teen driving laws. Teen Driver 411 was born! Then came those teen-focused taglines for each one of the new laws and the 1999 seat belt law!
Natalie Hayford, the other Co-president of SADD, pounded out the details and we priority mailed it into NOYS.
Upon returning to school on September 2nd, we were surprised to have opened an envelope announcing we have been chosen to participate as one of the Top Ten Rural Youth Traffic Safety Message Campaign Teams. We held our first SADD meeting on September 12th and got the project rolling! We have spent the next 50 days after school and on weekends dedicating our time to meet the goals of our campaign and our goal is to educate and empower the students at Anoka High School and in the State of Minnesota to make good decisions when driving.
Our campaign theme evolved into Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected Save Teen Lives! We are going to continue this campaign throughout the school year and in the future.
Once again, we thank you for giving us this incredible opportunity!
- Anoka High School SADD Chapter
Chillin’ With Your Seatbelt: Members of Anoka SADD came up with a rap about wearing your seatbelt called Chillin’ With Your Seatbelt. We went out to the school parking lot with a camera to record our performance. After taping it, we edited and put the video onto YouTube, as well as our website. We have been using this rap in all of our presentations and teaching it to other students. This rap has probably been the most popular thing that we have done. It is a Top 40 Hit on YouTube and is not only popular with teens, but with teachers here in Anoka, as well. While we were working on putting it on the website, one of the teachers came into the classroom and got it stuck in his head. Whenever he sees us, he starts singing it. We have our first cut and our final cut of Chillin’ With Your Seat Belt on YouTube now. Go check it out!
Smarties Presentations with Lee Glamm: On October 22, 2008, members of SADD presented to the four Driver’s Education classes with Lee Glamm, an educational consultant from AAA Minnesota-Iowa. Lee Glamm’s presentation was a discussion of distractions while driving. He showed news clips about teens being distracted and how it affects their driving. The students were very active in the discussion and seemed to really enjoy the presentation. We have pictures of Lee Glamm speaking that can be viewed on our website. After his presentation, members of SADD did a Smarties Presentation where we talked about the new teen driving laws, handed out Smarties Cards to all of the students, showed them our website, and preformed our Chillin’ With Your Seatbelt rap. Students went to the front of the class and presented the rap. They participated willingly and were very enthusiastic while rapping. There are clips and pictures of the SADD members presenting on our website. We enjoyed doing this presentation and plan on doing it to the Driver’s Education classes every quarter as well as having Lee Glamm return with us.
Red Ribbon Week: Anoka SADD chose the week of October 20-24 as Red Ribbon Week for the month of October at our school. SADD members put together ribbons and information cards for each of the staff members to put on their car antennas. On Friday, October 24, we asked people to dress in red and wear red ribbons. SADD members also prepared MADD red ribbons to be handed out at the parade the following Saturday.
The Red Ribbon was created to honor Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerena (of the Drug Enforcement Agency) who died fighting the war on drugs in 1985.
Agent Camerena, then 37, uncovered a multibillion-dollar drug ring in Mexico that was pushing a heavy supply of illicit drugs in the United States. Agent Camerena found evidence that linked drug activity to high ranking Mexican officials from the Mexican Army, police forces, and government. While working in Mexico to bring down the ring, Agent Camerena was kidnapped and killed in February of 1985. The Red Ribbon celebrates the memory of the special man who died striving to keep Americans safe from drugs. We support his efforts by displaying the red ribbon on our vehicles.
Many cars at our school have already put the red ribbons on their car, and we are very proud to show our support.
Teen Driver 411 Week: Anoka High School Principal, Mike Farley, declared the week of October 20-24 Teen Driver 411 Week. Each day our in school TV program, TV3 News, is shown to the entire student body during second period. For this week the anchors read a law and the pertaining tag line. Each Friday afternoon Farley sends out a phone message to all of the parents with a student at Anoka High School that updates them on what is happening. Friday, October 24, Farley included a segment about our Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected! Save Teen Lives! Campaign. This is the week that Lee Glamm came and spoke to the driver’s education classes.
Backpack Online, a district #11 newsletter, also wrote about our campaign and was sent out to all faculty in our district:

Anoka High School's Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) group was recently selected as a United States Department of Transportation 2008 National Rural Youth Traffic Safety Month Award winner.
The group was selected for its campaign to educate Minnesota teens and communities about the new teen driving laws passed by the 2008 Legislature and the existing 1999 seat belt law. The campaign, entitled "Get the 411 on Teen Drivers. Stay Connected. Save Teen Lives!," works to effectively eliminate teen injuries and fatalities caused by teen reckless driving.
Anoka SADD created the following taglines that correspond to the laws to educate Minnesota teens:
· Teen drivers may not drive between 12 AM and 5 AM unless with a parent/guardian for a school activity or a job. Tagline: 12 to 5 Unsafe to Drive.
· All drivers may not send or read received text messages while driving. Tagline: Dude jst drv.
· Every occupant must wear a seat belt while riding in a car (1999 law). Tagline: Chillin' With your seat belt.
· Teen drivers will be limited to one teen passenger during the first six months behind the wheel, unless a parent or guardian is with them. Tagline: Get the 411 on the 1-1-6.
A total of 10 U.S. teams were selected for this award. A top winner will be selected in November. The winning team message will be incorporated into the 2009 National Youth Traffic Safety Month Campaign.

Star Tribune: Members of Anoka SADD contacted Maria Elena Baca, a reporter for the Star Tribune, which is a statewide newspaper. Maria got back to us right away and was interested in writing our story. Natalie Hayford spoke with Maria over the phone for 40 minutes telling her about our project. Maria decided to expand her story and also interview many people we have been working with. She has also contacted us many times to find out more information and stay updated on our achievements. The article will be in the paper on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. It should be available online as well at www.startribune.com. We are very excited to see what she has put together.
Anoka Halloween Grande Day Parade: The City of Anoka claims the title of Halloween Capitol of the World. Saturday, October 25, Anoka High School SADD brought their campaign: Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected! Save Teen Lives to this annual Grand Day! Experts claim that 50,000 people attended this parade!
Our SADD Chapter had organized our 5,000 Red ribbons and 1,000 Smarties Don’t Break the Law Cards with the 2008 Minnesota Teen Driving Laws to distribute at the parade. Fifteen members of SADD arrived to the parade staging area and waited for the MADD Crash Car to arrive.
The Anoka High School SADD chapter was standing by our float before the parade started. Each year we take a crash car through the parade, as a display of the risks of drunk driving. Each car has a story. This particular car had been driven by a girl who was a twenty-year old freshman in college, named Danielle Pound. She left a party after drinking and slammed into the barrier wall on Interstate 694. She died minutes after the crash, despite the efforts of a medical professional. Our SADD advisor and we were standing there, talking and directing curious people to read the story on the trailer the crushed car was riding on when a couple walked up and asked if we were part of the parade. Our advisor said yea, and they could read the story on the side of the car. The man simply said, “Yea, we know, she's our daughter.” The step-mother of this young girl then started crying and placed flowers on the windshield of the mangled car. It was an emotional time for all of us, and we have learned even more from this tragedy.
Members of SADD carried the SADD banner, the Teen Driver 411.com banner, and our teen driver taglines and laws lawn signs in front of the Crash Car. According to parade rules, other members, walked along the sides of the parade and handed out the Red Ribbons and Smarties Cards. SADD had a positive reception from the public. People would call out to the SADD members to make sure that they received a Red Ribbon. SADD members tried to identify young drivers or soon-to-be- drivers. Many parents who were with their students appreciated the Smarties Cards. Comments were made like, “This is good information.” and “I heard that they (Legislature) had passed new teen driving laws.” We were pleased with the response from this activity.
When we arrived at the judging area, the SADD members performed Chillin’ with Your Seat Belt. We heard a round of applause at the end of our rap. We have heard that we were seen on Fox 9 News.
The contact with Danielle’s Dad and Step Mom proved to be an amazing experience. Her parents asked that we view her website, which we did. We wrote an e-mail and asked why the cause of her death was not a significant part of the website. Danielle’s mom contacted us and she has added to Danielle’s website, “Consequences of choices”. The page is a moving written expression of Danielle’s choice on Friday, May 16, 2008. Please read about Danielle’s story: http://www.daniellepound.com/15101.html.
Youth First: Representatives of Youth First, a City of Coon Rapids organization devoted to teen issues in their community, met with our SADD Chapter after school on Wednesday, October 29. We shared ideas! They invited us to present Teen Driver 411 to the members of the Youth First teen group at an evening meeting in November. They plan to share our materials, PSA’s, and DVD’s with the students at Coon Rapids High School. We will be incorporating many of the Youth First ideas into future campaigns. It is great to grow partners!
City of Maple Grove: We have been contacted by the City of Maple Grove to bring the Teen Driver 411 to their community and are working on a schedule to meet with them.
We are building our network one day at a time to spread the message to teens and the community.
District Court Show: During the first 50 days of our campaign, Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected Save Teen Lives!, two shows were written and taped for the District Court Show.
- Basics of DWI Law: This show focused on the 40,000 drivers arrested in Minnesota arrested this past year for DWI. A city attorney, a criminal defense lawyer, and Judge Halsey educated the public about Minnesota facts and DWI laws. November and December are crucial months for drinking and driving education.
View this show at the QCTV website: http://www.qctv.org/districtcourtshow/
- Teen Driving: Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected! Save Teen Lives! This show uses the campaign developed by Anoka High School SADD. The students developed the concept of the show with Judge Halsey. The students wrote the script for the show, selected the guests, contacted them, and maintained communication for the show. Our partner, QCTV, filmed with assistance from our SADD Chapter and edited the program to show on public access stations.
The Teen Driver 411 show can be seen on the OCTV’s website during the month of December at their website: http://www.qctv.org/districtcourtshow/
Tapes and DVD’s of the two shows have been sent to Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright Counties in Minnesota. NOYS has a DVD copy of the Teen Driver 411 District Court Show.
Dassel-Cokato: On October 31, 2008, nine members of Anoka SADD traveled on a bus for 58 miles through corn fields to get to the small town of Dassel-Cokato. We went to the high school, where we were greeted by the principal and office workers with a smile, and set up a table in the cafeteria. We presented our Feature Friday, PSA’s, and our rap at the three lunch periods. Students came up and preformed Chillin’ With Your Seatbelt with us and watched our videos attentively. They were very enthusiastic in doing so. We asked seniors to stand up so we could pass out MADD ribbons to each of them. Then, we asked everyone with their driver’s license to stand up so we could give them our Smarties Cards. One of the students who came up to perform Chillin’ With Your Seatbelt was the President of their school’s TATU, Teens Against Tobacco Use. We discussed the possibility of expanding their organization into a SADD Chapter. We are going to continue working with them so they can help us with our campaign to reach out to other communities. After the presentations to the three lunch periods, we went to a Driver’s Education classroom and showed them our website, had them participate in the rap, and we handed out MADD ribbons and Smartie Cards to all of the students. We gave them copies of the District Court Show, Feature Friday, and our PSA’s to keep for future use. Ironically, as we were leaving the school, we saw that a car crash had occurred while we were inside the school. Dassel-Cokato is part of Wright County, which has high fatalities and injuries due to car crashes. They have a very good program called Drive Wright, but they are still experiencing a high level of traffic crashes. We all really enjoyed meeting the students of Dassel-Cokato High School and plan on keeping in touch with them. We hope to influence them in a positive way.
Plan for December: We are in the process of asking Governor Pawlenty to proclaim a day or a week as Get the 411 on Teen Drivers! Stay Connected! Save Teen Lives! (teendriver 411.com). The/one of the days we would have Lee Glamm come and present to the new driver’s education classes and have SADD members do the smarties cards presentations. We would also start up our 9th grade presentations to 9th grade government classes from last year again. During this presentation a DVD is shown with the Simple Plan – “Untitled” music video and a break down of a car crash in 7/10 of a second. We also give the students a kit we put together for “Remember Me” key chains that we show the students how to make. The kit holds different color beads to represent a person that cares about them and would be affected if something were to happen to them. During this week we will put the yard signs and banner up at our own school for students to see. We will also have Kim Insley from Kare 11 come out and do a feature on us for her show Cool in School.

Feature Friday: Get the 411 on Teen Driving was produced by Feature Friday, our in-school TV Production Crew. This film was shown to our student body. Eventually it should be up on our teendriver411.com website.
A DVD copy of Get the 411 on Teen Driving along with smartie cards will be delivered to Forest Lake High School and other schools with our yard signs containing the 2008 Driving Teen Driving taglines and laws.
Community Announcement: Anoka City Council Open Forum is a great way to spread our Teen Driver 411 message! Members of Anoka High School brought this message to the Mayor, Council Members, and audience. The City Council Meeting is taped so that all of the citizens can watch our message. You can see the clip of this on the website and by clicking on the Teen Driver 411 Campaign page.
Elementary Safety Presentation: Anoka High School SADD revamped the 1st grade safety presentations to include seat belt use! Research shows that 1st grade students start to form their ideas about good choices.
The 1st graders were captivated by our rap, "Chillin With Your Seat belt!"
The rap goes:
Were driving in our car
No texting in our car
No speeding in our car
Our car
We represent S A D D
And when were done youre going to take a seat
Chillin with our seat belt like click click
When were done youre going to listen to this
Were driving in our car
Were clicked in our car
Were buckled in our car
Chillin with your seat belt word
We also wrote a song just for them! It goes: "If you're safe and you know it, click it or ticket! *Click click* If you're safe and you know it, click it or ticket! *Click click* If you're safe and you know it, and you really want to show it, click it or ticket! *Click click*"
Members of SADD presented at Lincoln Elementary classrooms. Five more elementary schools are waiting to hear our safety message. Members of SADD had a blast at Lincoln Elementary and are very excited to go to the other elementary schools in our area!
Clips of this event are up on the Teen Driver 411 Campaign page of the teendriver411.com website.
Collaboration: Anoka SADD uses the National SADD Seven Strategies to effectively develop a campaign. The Seven Strategies are policy, enforcement, communications/media, education, community collaboration, alternative activities, and early intervention. The strategy of collaboration plays a huge role in our Teen Driver 411 Campaign! Many groups participated in the public service announcements(PSAs) developed and filmed to educate our peers about the new teen driving laws!
We filmed three different PSAs: two for "Get the 411 on the 1:1:6" and one for "Dude Jst Drv" These are in the process of being edited. Once they are done they will be inserted into the District Court Show, along with the Feature Friday film and the interview with Jerry Sobieck. We will also be putting them onto our website and run as solo commercials on public access programming.
In September, many SADD members e-mailed and wrote letters to other groups asking them to participate in our Teen Driver 411 Campaign.
Each week we have had a lot of fun receiving e-mails and phone calls from our contacts!
Unexpectedly we received an invitation to present Teen Driver 411 at Youth Jam! MADD Minnesota is hosting a youth conference on November 19 in St. Cloud, MN.
We are already planning our presentation and wrote our conference presentation description.
(Attached is a copy of the Youth Jam brochure)
On October 14, we opened our mailbox to read an e-mail from the Principal of Dassel-Cokato to bring the Teen Driver 411 message to their high school and ALC!

"Adversity introduces you to yourself."
Our chapter has reached communities north, south, east, and west of us! We are very excited to reach out to so many other teens!
Taking our campaign to Forest Lake, MN: Forest Lake Mayor, Stev Stegner, and the City Council invited us to speak at their meeting. We were requesting to put up yard signs with the Teen Driver 411 laws and taglines and deliver the smartie cards to their high school driver's education students. We were graciously welcomed by the City Council, staff, and citizens.
Council member Susan Young said, "Put the signs in front of the high school so that we can protect our teens. This is a really interesting idea. It's about time teens did something about this issue."
Mayor Stev Stegner surprised Ashley Curley, Co-President, and requested that she perform our rap, "Chillin' With Your Seatbelt." Ashley performed the rap with great gusto for the audience! Mayor Stegner commented, "That took guts!" :)
We ask ourselves, "Why are we working so hard on this campaign?" The last two months have been hard work, but yet fulfilled. When we read the Star Tribune headline dated October 14, 2008, "Teen was not wearing a seat belt in fatal pickup rollover," it reminded us all of our mission and dedication to this campaign. We learned that a young 17 year old male, a senior at Lincoln High School, rolled his vehicle south of his hometown of Thief River Falls. Alcohol was not a factor, but not wearing his seat belt was.

September 30 Update:
The District Court Show is being filmed on Thursday, October 2nd, a program directed primarily at parents of teen drivers, as 75% of teens surveyed say their parents would be the best influence on getting them to drive safely. The number possible of people who may see the show on their television is 945,402. It will also be available online at http://www.qctv.org/districtcourtshow/ by October 31st.
We wrote a script for Bart Ward, a radio anchor and the President of the Anoka Halloween Committee, on KBOB Radio Station of Anoka to say on his morning show to help spread our message about the new teen driving laws and our taglines.
On October 25th we will have a crash car rented from MADD with a story board next to it and towed through the Annual Anoka Halloween Grande Day Parade that roughly over 30,000 people attend. Along with the float we will be passing out 5000 red ribbons and carrying signs to inform teens and parents about the driving laws to reduce teen reckless driving.
Our teendriver411.com website is under construction and will be up soon.
An in school TV program, Feature Friday, is being produced by students in our school about our campaign, Get the 411 on Teen Drivers. A release date to other Minnesota School Districts is October 29th.
Minnesota leads the nation in the percentage of teen fatalities caused by reckless driving. The Anoka High School SADD Chapter has dedicated 2008-2009 to educating Minnesota teens and the community about this issue.
The Anoka High School SADD chapter is now ready to educate Minnesota teens and communities about the new teen driving laws. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty signed the 2008 Transportation Policy bill into law at the end of the 2008 legislative session.
We will write and produce media about the new teen driving laws and the ban on text messaging. We will continue to focus on seatbelt use among teens and teen driving safety.
Anoka SADD has obtained the domain name of teendriver411.com and will develop content for the site.
Anoka SADD will develop PSA's for TV, Radio, and Newspapers using the Tagline: Teen Driver 411.
Anoka SADD has come up with four minor taglines to educate Minnesota teens about the new laws that affect them. We will develop a text message campaign, Myspace site, and post on YouTube.
The following are the new laws followed by the taglines created by Anoka SADD to educate Minnesota teens!
1. Teen drivers will be limited to one teenage passenger during their first six months behind the wheel, unless their parents are with them.
Tagline: Get the 411 on the 1:1:6 (one teen driver, one teen passenger, for six months)
2. The new law places a curfew on provisional drivers, making it illegal for them to drive between midnight and five A.M. unless related to school activities or a job.
Tagline: 12 to 5 Unsafe to Drive
3. If you're caught composing or sending a text message while behind the wheel of a moving car, you can be pulled over and ticketed. Even reading incoming messages could lead to a citation.
Tagline: Dude Jst Drv
4. Every occupant will wear a seatbelt (1999 law).
Tagline: Chillin with Your Seat Belt. (This will be a rap message).
